Why Massage?

Why massage? It is an important question to answer. Massage is a concentrated session of touch and as with touch, there are two elements; the physical and the emotional. To simplify this, for every physical happening there is an emotional response and likewise to every emotional happening, there is a physical response.

When you receive a massage there are two responses, the physical and emotional.

Here are some of the physical responses as to why massage is good for you.

  • The skin: massage improves tone & elasticity, softens skin and reduces stress lines.
  • Muscular system: massage helps release fibrosis and adhesions in muscle fibres, assists in maintaining flexibility, relieves tension and stiffness in muscles.
  • For sports people it decreases recovery time after injury and after hard exercise; it will also improve sporting performance.
  • Skeletal system: Massage relieves stiff joints and with passive manipulation assists in proper body alignment.
  • Circulatory system: Massage slows the heart, decreases blood pressure, improves cell nutrition, improves cell oxygen supply.
  • Lymphatic system: Massage flushes out toxins and metabolic wastes.

Here are some emotional responses as to why massage is good for you:-

  • Massage is relaxing, afterwards you feel calmer, softer, lighter.
  • It induces a restful state, maybe a desire to sleep. Sometimes people will fall asleep during massage because they have beens so tired.
  • Improves sleep, generally people report sleeping well after massage
  • Makes you feel lighter, as if weight and tension have been lifted from your shoulders - they have!
  • Satisfies a need for nurturing and caring. A deeply held need within us all.
  • It can unblock deeply held emotional blockages.

Stomach Ache All these emotional responses generate a physiological state within the body which lead toward improved health and wellbeing. This is why massage should be something we all receive on a regular basis. It is my firm viewpoint that regular massage would assist in long term health improvements.

The fact is that massage decreases stress levels by releasing trapped energy; energy that gets bound up in muscle and fascia (connective) tissue which then becomes hardened and energy inefficent. This trapped energy causes all sort of physical and emotional problems.

There is much spoken about stress today and much of it needs some serious consideration because quite frankly, stress (too much of it) makes us ill, sick and even diseased.

Consider Irritable Bowel Syndome? If you don’t have it, you probably know someone who does? "The key point is that IBS is strongly related to emotional stress and strain. Research on the psychosocial aspects of these disorders has yielded three general observations: 1. Psychological stress exacerbates gastrointestinal symptoms. 2. Psychological disturbances amplify illness experience and adversely affect health status. 3. Having a functional GI disorder like IBS impairs the quality of one’s life." http://www.irritablebowelsyndrome.us/what.htm

Heart Attack And what about Heart Disease?

"The relationship between stress, heart disease and sudden death has been recognized since antiquity. The incidence of heart attacks and sudden death have been shown to increase significantly following the acute stress of natural disasters like hurricanes, earthquakes and tsunamis and as a consequence of any severe stressor that evokes fight or flight responses. Coronary heart disease is also much more common in individuals subjected to chronic stress and recent research has focused on how to identify and prevent this growing problem, particularly with respect to job stress. In many instances, we create our own stress that contributes to coronary disease by smoking and other faulty lifestyles or because of dangerous traits like excess anger, hostility, aggressiveness, time urgency, inappropriate competitiveness and preoccupation with work." The American Institute For Stress. American Institute for Stress

Stress is insidious and can impact on our daily lives in many different ways, infact stress related illnesses account for the majority of visits to the doctor's surgery. According to a recent Health and Safety Executive report, 6.5 million sick days are being taken each year in the United Kingdom due to stress and stress related illnesses and "Some physicians suggest that stress may be responsible for 75 per cent of all diseases in the Western world including skin diseases (e.g., psoriasis and eczema), headaches and migraine, digestive disorders, high blood pressure and heart-related diseases, as well as back-ache and muscle pain, poor eyesight and depression."

    Stressed at work
These are shocking statistics but they are I believe a sign of the times. Life is competitive, demanding and stressful and we can't escape from it but we can do a great deal to alleviate it. We can take more exercise; take better rest; we can implement a routine of daily stretching or take up Yoga, Tai-chi or something similar; we can take up walking in the countryside or swimming; we can study Buddhism, learn to meditate or learn relaxation techniques and we can learn to have fun. Of course we can supplement these with receiving relaxing therapeutic massage.
There are so many ways of reducing stress and improving our health, and massage has been proved to improve health both physically and emotionally.

Why wait until your body is crying out for help and you get sick or diseased? Start doing something about it today and book a stress relieving massage. It could be the beginning of a new you.

    Holistic Approach to Therapy
There are many reasons why we get sick and suffer disease (dis-ease) and often they are caused by our lifestyle, how we lead our lives. Injuries can be caused because muscles are tense and joints are stiff, because we are emotionally tense. Disease can occur because of bad diet and poor circulation due to lack of exercise. Chronic stress can be caused by lack of confidence and poor self image. The reasons can be many and varied.

A holistic approach takes into consideration all about the individual and not just the presenting problem, this is why when you come for massage treatment, you will be receive an initial free consultation (allow an extra 20 mins). Of course, if you just want a massage, that is fine as well.

Massage cannot solve all problems but it does provide the benefits as described above and the more you recieve massage, the greater the cumulative affect. For the greatest benefit, massage should be used in conjunction with lifestyle changes and a positive mental attitude toward life.
