Sports Massage was developed to help all those football and rugby players, riders and runners, professional and amateur who damage themselves through their sporting activities. Having said that, this is for anyone who has a problem with muscles, ligaments and tendons. Sports massage is about treating injury, hastening recovery, body maintenance and helping to improve performance. It covers the repair, management, manipulation and rehabilitation of the soft tissues of the body and is a blend of Swedish massage and Shiatsu. Sports masseurs work deeply on muscles to eliminate toxins embedded in muscle fibres, remove adhesions, and minimize scar tissue build up. They also work to restore muscles to full working action and overall flexibility after injury.
Deep tissue massage
also leads to improved circulation which aids better cell nutrition, greater elasticity of muscle fibre, and reduced recovery time.
Pre and post-event massage
As well as dealing with injuries, sports masseurs provide pre and post-event massage. Pre-Event sports massage helps warm up the muscles by forcing in fresh blood to the muscles, stretching them and making them flexible for optimal athletic performance. The massage stimulates the flow of blood and nutrients to the muscle, reduces muscle tension, loosen the muscles and produce a feeling of psychological readiness. A pre-event massage is best done up to two days prior to the main event. Post-event massage however, focuses on relieving muscle soreness, minimizing the effects of fatigue It promotes blood flow to the muscles to remove lactic acid and waste build-up bought about by strenuous exercise and muscle exhaustion, which can cause cramping. Post-event massage also increases recovery time which is important for athletes with tight training and event schedules.
Improving performance
It is of course the goal of any competitor to improve their performance and pre-event massage whether sports or holistic can help achieve this; if incorporated with correct training techniques, regular training and good diet. A little while ago, I was working with a cycling club, providing regular deep tissue massage two days before their main event days. As sessions came and went, the riders I massaged were happy to report that not only were old injuries disappearing but their times were improving. In fact on one occasion, I was to pre-event massage, three out of twenty-five entrants of a particularly challenging hill climb. The next time we met for a massage session one of the riders reported with great glee that he and the other two riders I had massage were the only ones to improve their times. Definite proof that massage helps competitors improve their performances. But even greater proof is that most professional sports people now work with sports massage therapists as part of their training schedule.

Preventing injury
If the
body
is strong, flexible, balanced and without undue
stress,
it will be less prone to injury. Strong, injury free muscle tissue enables the joints to operate efficiently and effectively and so prevent joints becoming damaged due to hard physical activity. Sports massage with
deep tissue massage
releases tension in the
muscle
tissue which will impede performance and increase the possibility of damage occurring. Sports massage also helps to break down scar tissue in muscles caused by injury and also releases trapped toxins caused by muscle exertion. Massage makes muscles work better and all serious sports people should incorporate massage into their regular training schedule.
