Indian Head Massage

Indian head massage is based on the Ayurvedic system of healing using the upper Chakras, which has been practiced in India for over a thousand years. It is said that the head more than any other part of our body represents who we are. It is the centre of our nervous system and home to our identity and intelligence. The Chakra at the top of our head called the Crown Chakra and is the one we use to communicate with our higher self. If our head feels good, we feel good. Traditionally it provided Indian families with relaxation and healing on a daily basis, as well as playing a part in rituals such as weddings and births, not to mention everyday events like a trip to the barber.

Indian Head Massage is a relaxing and de-stressing massage of the scalp, face, neck, shoulders and upper arms. Oil to the scalp is optional. There are two variants; Traditional Ayurvedic and Western Style. The treatment incorporates shiatsu and acupressure techniques on the head, scalp, face, neck, upper back, shoulders, arms, ears and hands, helping to relax tense areas and rebalance the body energy by releasing any areas of negativity or stress.

The client generally sits fully clothed in a massage chair for the treatment. The therapist uses a range of different movements including the application of deep kneading and compression movements over the neck, shoulder and scalp areas. In addition, the therapist will also gently stimulate and stroke pressure points on the face. The session will usually last from twenty to forty-five minutes, and most therapists like their clients to sit quietly for ten or twenty minutes once the massage has been completed.

Indian head massage is especially good for relieving stress, tension, fatigue, insomnia, headaches, migraine and sinusitis. Clients report that the experience is deeply calming and relaxing, leaving them feeling energised and revitalised and better able to concentrate. It also improves sleep, strengthens hair, eliminates toxins and is psychologically uplifting.

Why not massage your own head? It's easy and good for releasing tension and your hair. Learn self massage. Massaging your own head is not difficult. Just experiment using your fingers to thoroughly massage your scalp. Try when you are next washing your hair but really put some effort into massaging your head. Your arms may get tired but you can rest for a while and then do more. You can continue this when you dry your hair with a towel. Not only will you loosen your tight scalp and bring more blood through the veins to the region, your hair will feel softer and lighter. And you don't have to wait until you wash your hair, you can massage your scalp at any time you have a quiet moment at home; better to do it regularly.

By doing this you may discover a lot of tender points but don't worry, just keep massaging, in time they will disappear. I used to get a lot of tension in my scalp and temples but after regular self massage, it cleared up.
