Holistic Approach to massage therapy

At Massage Therapy @Deal I choose to take a holistic approach toward massage. I am realistic enough to know that massage isn’t everything, even though I believe in it greatly.

So what is the holistic approach? It is about treating the whole person and not just part of them. My concern is for the health of the individual and that those who come to me for help do get it. I don't however have all the answers especially because the answers often lie with client but I do try to help the person find solutions to their problems. meditation by river Our modern approach to health in the UK is treatment centred; you get sick, you go to see your G.P. and tell him/her your symptoms. He/she examines you, asks a few questions then gives you some medication and hopefully all will be well. Unfortunately our health and life is not as simple as that. Now I’m sure that most doctors would love to work holistically and spend a lot of time with you and go much deeper into the reasons why you are sick, offering more in-depth information and support but they just don’t have the time. The sad fact about our system of treatment is that the sicker you become, the better the treatment you receive. Should you get life threatening cancer, it is likely the treatment you will get will be intensive and very good. Now you may be saying that is a good thing but why should we have to get to that stage to get the best treatment and advice? How many diseases are actually preventable? Isn’t prevention better than cure?

Massage, reflexology, aromatherapy and other similar forms of massage are treatments which are generally grouped under ‘complimentary therapies’, as if they are some sort of add-on but the peculiar thing is many of these so-called ‘complimentary therapies’ have been around thousands of years. They are not recent ‘new-age’ inventions. What is more, they are as much preventative in their effectiveness as they are treatments to actual illnesses, in fact more so.

True holistic approach

Paying attention to what we eat, how we exercise, relax and how much responsibility we take on, seems like a good idea for everyone but in reality, it is easy to overlook what is good for us. We get too wrapped up in work, family and life in general to take good care of ourselves. The trouble is that when our bodies are screaming at us to slow down or stop, it is very difficult to respond; until we get really sick, and getting back on track can be really difficult.

When you first come to me for a massage, I include a free consultation (this is optional) and we complete an assessment form together. The information you give to me is confidential and will not be shared with anyone else, without your express permission. An assessment form is simply a compilation of information about your health; if you have had any injuries and what treatments you’ve had. I believe it is important that if we want to know where we are going, we need to know where we have come from. So for example, if you suffer from a reoccurring bad back; in order to decide the best way forward as regards having a strong, healthy and pain free back, it is important to know how it might have occurred in the first place and what makes it reoccur. Knowing our past determines how we progress in the future. oils and herbs Working holistically, takes an overview of the individual; their problems and their lifestyle. It is not possible to separate the two. Lifestyle incorporates just about everything including work, relationships, family, sport and interests. The reason for this is that our stresses and even many of our illnesses come from how we lead our lives. A simple example of this is someone who likes to play football every Sunday but they do little to keep fit, train spasmodically and don’t watch their diet; how can they complain when they get so easily injured? Everything we do affects how we are; it is a simple equation.

I do not believe that it is the practitioner who ultimately solves the client’s problems, for it is only the client who can do this. Solving a reoccurring bad back cannot be done on the treatment couch because it is often about the lifestyle of the individual. Yes, massage will help, as will other treatments but ultimately you need to consider what is causing the problem in the first place. If you are suffering from chronic stress, it is your body which will suffer. This is a very important consideration when it comes to resolving the problem. Maybe also you have developed a bad posture without realising it and this is putting a strain on your back? There can be many reasons for suffering from a This is the holistic approach. Of course you just may wish to have a relaxing hot stones massage or a straightforward massage without the assessment, that is fine but if you would like specific problems dealing with, we will take the holistic approach.
