Frequently asked questions

Please note: these responses to frequently asked questions are my views; other practitioners may answer the questions a little differently.

Q. I am a female and would like to be massaged by a female?
A. That is not a problem, most therapists understand the need of some people to be massaged by someone of the same gender. There are links to other practitioners on this site, or why not bring a buddie?

Q. How much will I need to undress during massage?
A. This is entirely up to you but suffice to say that massage works best skin to skin. You will not be expected to be naked but if you prefer to be so, that is fine. It is important for you to feel comfortable. Most therapists will expect you to leave your pants on, some may not. Towels are always used to cover the genitals and lady’s breasts and privacy is always respected. It is important to stress that genitals will not be touched or massaged. Also, if you are uncertain about full body massage, why not try a face, hands and feet massage – you will find it very relaxing.

Q. I am overweight and am conscious about my body.
A. Receiving massage can help you feel better about your body. Many people are self conscious about their bodies; it is a challenge to overcome. However, please let me know if you have difficulties climbing stairs or might have difficulty getting on and off the massage table.

Q. I am physically disabled and cannot climb stairs, and would have difficulty getting on to a table.
A. It is important that disabled people have the same access to massage as anyone else. I am able to bring the table downstairs and I also have a special massage table which is more accessible (this may depend on the level of your disability). Please contact me and let know the nature of your disability and I will make every effort to ensure that you can receive a massage like anyone else.

Q. I am a Deaf person and would like a massage.
A. I am not a BSL user but if you would like to receive massage, I will ensure that we have ways of communicating when necessary. Also when starting with a new client I complete a health questionnaire, it would be a matter of you filling in the form and not me. You may bring a freind 'buddie'.

Q. I am blind person and am a little worried about not being able to see when coming for a massage.
A.I have worked a lot with blind people and so am used to guiding and communicating with blind and partially sighted people. If you want to bring a guide or your Guide Dog, that is fine. If you want this information in another format, let me know.

Q. I have a heart condition, can I receive massage?
A. Everybody’s circumstances are different, it would be important to check with your G.P. to ensure massage is safe for you. Massage increases blood circulation around the body and could be harmful to a weak heart. However, a massage of face, hands and feet would be very beneficial.

Q. I’ve had a stroke, can I receive massage?
A. Aromatherapy and massage can be very comforting and relaxing for someone who has suffered a stroke. Regular gentle massage of the back and shoulders can significantly reduce the anxiety, pain, blood pressure and heart rate of stroke patients.

Q. I suffer from high blood pressure, can I receive massage?
A. Studies have shown that regular gentle massage can help to reduce blood pressure because in simple terms, it relaxes and creates a general feeling of wellbeing.

Q. I suffer from eczema, can I receive massage?
A. Studies have shown that flares in the condition are associated with stress and anxiety. Massage can help alleviate stress and anxiety; however it is important to incorporate massage with relaxation techniques and changes in lifestyle to effectively reduce stress in the long term. If the skin is not inflamed, the affected areas can be massaged.

Q. My son is a keen on sport and would like to try massage, what is the legal situation about him receiving massage.
A. Apparently in law, you reach adulthood at the age of 18; so if you are younger, you are deemed a minor. Therefore a minor should be accompanied by an adult during massage at all times and have their parent’s consent to receiving massage.

Q. I am pregnant, can I receive massage?
A. The short answer is yes but it is best left until after thirteen weeks. Also if there are any complications, these will need to be considered and advice should be sort from a medical practitioner. In the latter stages of pregnancy, it is best to perform a seated massage. Massage can also be performed with the mother-to-be lying on her side and the use of pillows for supporting comfort. If you wish to massage your pregnant partner it is advisable to read a good book on the subject.

Q. I am concerned about arousal during massage.
A. Therapeutic massage therapists never touches or massages the genitalia. If arousal does occur, it is nothing to feel embarrassed about. If it is a concern to you, don’t be afraid to discuss it with the practitioner. Leaving your pants on might help to keep it under control!

If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
