Essential Oils

Essential oils are created by extracting the essence from certain plants to produce a distilled fragrance of the plant. For more information on how the essence is created visit

"Essential oils have small molecules that enter the body through the skin and the bloodstream. Once absorbed, the oil molecules are directed around the body to affect various organs according to the relevant properties. Essential oils can also be absorbed through inhalation through the nostrils.

True natural oils are a complex combination of different constituents including trace elements. It is this combination which gives the natural oil its therapeutic value.

Many oils are now produced synthetically and are called “Nature identical” but the fine balance of naturally occurring constituents and trace elements cannot be exactly reproduced and hence the balance and effectiveness of the synthetic oil cannot hope to match that of the naturally occurring oils.

How to use Essential Oils

Massage: The most effective way of using aromatherapy oils is in massage. It is very important that they be diluted first in a cold compressed carrier oil, such as Sweet Almond, Peach Kernel or Jojoba oil. These carrier oils are also beneficial to the skin and will assist the absorption of the chosen essential oil.

Therapeutic baths:

Most essential oils are ideally suited for the use in the bath. The oil will assist you by absorption through both the skin and the nose. Add a total of 8 drops just before you get in, swish the water around to ensure complete dispersion; close the door and blissfully soak in the oil and its fragrance for at least 10 minutes. Inhalation: Add 3-6 drops of essential oil to a steaming bowl of water, place a towel over your head and lean over the bowl allowing the water vapour to carry the oil to your nose. Remain like this, inhaling deeply, for several minutes. Alternatively, add 1-2 drops of essential oil to a handkerchief and hold to your nose and inhale. Inhalation is ideal for sinus and chest problems, coughs, colds etc offering immediate results. Eucalyptus, Pine and also Lavender are very good. Compresses: Add 5-6 drops of essential oil to a small bowl of warm water. Next place a piece of cotton cloth or lint on the surface of the water, allowing it to soak in the liquid for a few minutes. Wring out and apply to the part of the body needing treatment. Compresses are normally placed on the neck, forehead or legs.

Dermal applications: Body oils and massage oils. Most essential oils cannot be used directly on skin but need to be diluted first in a quality cold vegetable oil or plain base cream."
