It is widely proven that aromatherapy benefits just about every ailment. It is a true therapy in its own right. It is a ‘therapy of scent’, being that the essential oils used are derived from various parts of specific plants. In the past it has been known as an alternative therapy treatment but many enlightened people now see it as a serious mainstream therapy for many ailments.
The treatment is based on the concept of promoting harmony between mind and body, which can have a strengthening effect on the immune system.
The history of aromatherapy goes back to at least 2000 B.C. and its uses, and aromatic oils are mentioned in the Bible. The ancient Egyptians held essential oils in great esteem, as did the Greeks and Romans.

In England, the earliest written record of their uses was in the thirteenth century but it was until Nicholas Culpepper wrote a book documenting the medicinal properties of hundreds of plants. In more modern times (1920s), Renée Gattefosse did a copious amount of study about the medicinal uses of essential oils and their ability to penetrate the skin, thus being carried into the bloodstream. More work was carried out in Britain in the late 1950s by Marguerite Maury, who incorporated the use of essential oils with massage.
Aromatherapy is a well known tried and tested therapy, and is particularly interesting when two or three oils are used together, working synergistically.
Research is still taking place into the therapy, and it is becoming more recognised as an effective complimentary therapy, being used alongside conventional treatments in clinics, hospitals and hospices across the country.

Aromatherapy Benefits & Nature's Cures
In 1937, Frenchman Rene-Maurice Gattefosse applied the label of aromatherapy to the use of essential oils when he saw that lavender oil healed a burn on his hand. The essential oils are derived from plants and trees. Practitioners use aromatherapy to better mood and health.
A Long History Helping People
The ancients used aromatherapy as far back as 6000 years ago to treat ailments. In fact, aromatherapy can be traced to ancient Egypt and Rome. The practice may derive from Arabian doctors who distilled aromatic oils as part of alchemy. Today, aromatherapy is a cornerstone of alternative medicine. Unfortunately, it’s rare to find health insurance coverage of aromatherapy.
The Magic is Essential Oils
At the base of aromatherapy lie essential oils. You can combine essential oils or use them by themselves to achieve therapeutic benefits. The oils have many uses, from getting rid of stress to clearing up skin. Be aware, however, that some oils prove an irritant to skin. In fact, some essential oils pack such a punch you need to dilute them first. To dilute them, use carrier oils, such as sweet almond oil.
Price for essential oils depends on a multitude of factors, including the extraction method and market desirability. Generally speaking, pure organic essential oils are the priciest. Price aside, all essential oils should be kept in the dark when in storage in order for them to maintain their power.
Aromatherapy oils must be essential oils. Alternatively, fragrance oils deliver no therapeutic benefits for the user. Such oils are synthetically based. Unfortunately, many of these oils are sold as aromatherapy s so always look at the ingredients before use.
Enjoying Aromatherapy
Many choose to inhale aromatherapy’s fumes in order to benefit from it. They believe that it offers psychological and physical healing. Yet some apply the essential oils directly to the skin for aesthetic gain and to send it to the bloodstream for positive health effects.
Aromatherapy is an ancient practice that has marched through time, helping thousands along the way. They key to successful use is knowledge. Always read the ingredients before you buy – make sure you are purchasing organic essential oils. Further, consult a trained aromatherapy professional and medical professional before use. And then, in no time, you’ll be a beneficiary of this ancient art…and science.
